The record of August 12, 2026

On August 12, 2026 the Moon's shadow entered Spain over the Asturian coast at 20:26:36 and the last mainland municipality entered totality six minutes and forty seconds later. This page is the record of that crossing, province by province and town by town, with the figures frozen as they were computed.

What this table holds

The table above does not list municipalities: it lists provinces, the 31 that had at least one town inside the path of totality. Behind each row sits a hub with the full list of its municipalities, and behind each municipality a sheet with the eclipse contacts, the length of totality and the historical climate of the place.

Of the 8,131 municipalities in the Instituto Geográfico Nacional's table, 3,963 fell inside the path. The rest of Spain saw a partial eclipse, deeper or shallower depending on the distance to the band. The maximum duration shown on each row belongs to the best municipality in that province, not to an average: it ranks provinces by what they offered at their most favourable point, which is how the journey was actually planned. Provincial counts were just as uneven: Burgos alone put 371 towns inside the path, while Barcelona and Pontevedra managed three each.

Where it lasted, and where it barely did

The country's outright maximum was shared by three Asturian councils, El Franco, Navia and Salas, all three at exactly 110 seconds. Behind them came Cármenes in León, and Ribadeo and Burela in Lugo, at 109. At the other end, Senan in Tarragona recorded 2 seconds of totality: the shadow barely clipped its municipal boundary.

Between those two extremes the national median settled at 90 seconds and the mean at 81.5. In total, 1,045 municipalities reached 100 seconds or more, 2,010 made it to 90, and 188 stayed below 30. That lopsidedness is why the province hubs group their towns into duration bands instead of dumping them into a single list: inside one province, sitting on the centreline of the path or on its edge could mean more than a minute of difference.

An eclipse pinned to the horizon

None of those figures makes sense without looking at where the Sun was. In the north-west of the mainland, totality arrived with the disc 12 degrees above the horizon, the highest reading in the country, measured at Vila de Cruces in Pontevedra. From there the altitude fell away towards the south-east: at Alaior, on Menorca, the Moon covered the Sun with barely 2 degrees of altitude.

The azimuth moved between 279 and 288 degrees across the whole band, always west-north-west. In practice that meant the eclipse was not watched by looking up but by looking at the horizon, and that a building, a low ridge or a line of trees in the wrong direction was enough to ruin the view. It is the reason this archive does not settle for publishing one time per town and pairs every sheet with a simulation of the sky at the moment of totality. A clear west-north-west horizon mattered as much as the duration printed beside the name.

Why the Sun set before it ended

That very low Sun had a second consequence: across much of the country the eclipse did not end, it set. Of the 3,963 municipalities inside the path, 2,929 never saw fourth contact, the instant the Moon leaves the solar disc entirely, because the Sun went down still eclipsed. Counting the partially shadowed rest of Spain as well, the figure was 6,479 municipalities.

That is why many sheets in this archive have an empty box where the end of the eclipse should be, with a note explaining it: the datum is not missing, it never came to exist. As for the clock, totality entered Spain at 20:26:36 over Gozón in Asturias, and the last municipality in the path entered it at 20:33:16. Maxima were spread between 20:27:18 and 20:33:30, all in mainland summer time. Totality ended at Formentera at 20:33:50: seven minutes and fourteen seconds after it began at Gozón, and that was the whole time the shadow spent over Spain.

What is kept, and what has changed

This archive has not been rewritten. The times, the durations and the magnitudes are the ones the Instituto Geográfico Nacional published for the event, and they remain at the same addresses they had before August 12: no 2026 URL has been withdrawn, redirected or renamed, because a record that moves stops being a record.

What has changed is the tense and the framing. Where there was a countdown there is now an archive. Magnitude was 1.03 in every municipality inside the path, a slim margin over the solar disc that explains why totality never passed two minutes anywhere in Spain, not even on the Asturian coast.
