Municipalities in Cuenca within the path of totality
121 municipalities in Cuenca saw the totality of the August 12, 2026 eclipse.
Observation guide
With 121 municipalities inside the band and the city of Cuenca among them, the province ranked high without being one of the largest slices of the path. The duration ceiling was at Beteta, in the north, where the Sun stayed fully covered for 91 seconds, a comfortable minute and a half. That was a substantial totality, and having the provincial capital inside the band made Cuenca one of the easier options logistically for anyone who preferred not to improvise accommodation in a village of two hundred people.
The top five entries in the observation index clustered within a very short radius in the mountainous northeast: Beteta (80.2), Cueva del Hierro (79.4), Valsalobre (79.4), Carrascosa (79.3) and Lagunaseca (78.9). All shared 90 or 91 seconds and clear-sky records between 53.8 % and 57 %, differences so slight that the final call came down to practical grounds such as road access or the local skyline. Elsewhere in the province the historical clear-sky record reaches 69.6 %, though with fewer seconds of totality on offer.
At maximum the Sun was between 5 and 7 degrees above the horizon. In the Serranía, a landscape of gorges, limestone tablelands and enclosed valleys, that low angle decided everything: a west-facing rock wall removed the event from view entirely, while an open clearing or a bare field looking west-northwest delivered it whole. The figures used here, from 46.9 % to 69.6 % with a provincial average of 55.5 %, summarise thirty years of data between 1996 and 2025 and say nothing about that afternoon's sky. The next total eclipse visible from Spain, on 2 August 2027, runs only across Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla.
Totality was not evenly distributed across Cuenca: 85 seconds separated its best-placed town from its worst. That is why the list is split into three bands worked out from the province itself, the terciles of its own duration distribution rather than one fixed cut applied to all thirty-one provinces. Inside each band the towns stay in alphabetical order.
The long third: 1m 14s to 1m 31s
42 of the 121 towns in Cuenca, 35% of the provincial total, reached 1m 14s of totality or more. 3 towns shared the longest reading in the band, 1m 31s, among them Beteta, Cueva del Hierro and Valsalobre. They cluster towards the north of the province, the side the centreline of the path ran along: the closer to that axis, the longer the shadow took to pass.

The middle band: 59s to 1m 13s
Another 43 towns, 36% of the province, landed between 59s and 1m 13s. The ceiling of the band, 1m 13s, was reached by 4 towns at once, 18 seconds short of Beteta, which set the provincial maximum. This is the transition band and it behaves like one: it holds no area of its own, it slots in between the other two.

The short third: 6s to 58s
The remaining 36 towns, 30% of the province, fell short of 59s. The floor of the band, 6s, was set by 2 towns together, 85 seconds below Beteta. Figures like those put you on the very edge of the path, where the shadow only clips the ground and totality shrinks to little more than a blink. They concentrate in the south of the province, the side furthest from the centreline of the path.
