Municipalities in Asturias within the path of totality

No point on the Spanish path beat Asturias for sheer duration. El Franco recorded 110 seconds of totality, one minute fifty exactly, the highest figure in this whole atlas. Seventy-eight municipalities fell inside the shadow, Oviedo among them. The sting lay in the cloud statistics, the least favourable anywhere on the path: a 12.1 % average for clear sky, with some municipalities dropping to 4.6 %. Asturias, in short, was handed the finest eclipse on offer beneath the least reliable sky.

Our index resolved that tension by pushing inland and uphill. Degaña, in the mountainous southwest, tops the province at 75.8. It sacrificed eight seconds against the maximum, settling for 102, but its 29.1 % clear-sky rate is more than double what the coast manages. Nava (74.3) and Sobrescobio (73.8) climb to 106 and 107 seconds on 19.2 % and 16.4 %. Ribera de Arriba reached 109 seconds, near the provincial ceiling, yet its 13.5 % holds it to 73.7, level with Villaviciosa, which trades five seconds for 19.7 %.

On solar altitude Asturias came off well: 9 to 11 degrees, about as high as the Sun got on the mainland path. That helped in a region of deep valleys, though it did not remove the need for a clean west-northwest horizon, easier on the coastal shelf than on a valley floor. The percentages record what the atmosphere did across thirty Augusts from 1996 to 2025: a 12 % average did not doom the day, just as 60 % would not have guaranteed it. The next total eclipse falls on 2 August 2027, but its path touches only Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla: no totality in Asturias.
