Municipalities in La Rioja within the path of totality

174 municipalities in La Rioja saw the totality of the August 12, 2026 eclipse.

Almost the whole of La Rioja slipped under the shadow, with 174 municipalities inside the path and Logroño among them. The longest totality fell at Canales de la Sierra, in the upper Najerilla, at 101 seconds, one minute forty-one. The province posed an unusual dilemma, though, because its two key variables pulled in opposite directions. The longest durations sat in the southwestern sierras, while the historical odds of a clear sky improve as you move southeast, towards the Alhama.

The index captured that tug of war as a dead heat. Aguilar del Río Alhama and Viniegra de Arriba tie at 78.6 by opposite routes. The first gave up eight seconds, 92 against 100, but leaned on a 50.4 % clear-sky rate, the strongest of the five. The second maximised duration on a much thinner 40.9 %. Behind them, Villavelayo (77.8), Viniegra de Abajo (77.6) and Canales de la Sierra (77.5) all bet on the clock, holding 99 to 101 seconds while their sky figures slide as low as 36 %.

With the Sun only 7 to 8 degrees above the horizon, La Rioja's terrain forced some planning. In the southwestern mountain valleys, where the best durations lay, the slopes blocked the western sky outright, and those who saw it did so from a rise or a hollow that opened towards west-northwest. The 37.6 % provincial average conceals a wide spread, 20 % to 50.9 % by municipality, and condenses three decades of records from 1996 to 2025: climate background, never a report of that evening. The next total eclipse, on 2 August 2027, leaves La Rioja out; its path crosses only Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla.

Totality was not evenly distributed across La Rioja: 26 seconds separated its best-placed town from its worst. That is why the list is split into three bands worked out from the province itself, the terciles of its own duration distribution rather than one fixed cut applied to all thirty-one provinces. Inside each band the towns stay in alphabetical order.

The long third: 1m 32s to 1m 41s

59 of the 174 towns in La Rioja, 34% of the provincial total, reached 1m 32s of totality or more. The longest reading in the band, 1m 41s, was shared by Canales de la Sierra and Villavelayo. They do not sit in one corner: they spread across much of the territory, with no single part of La Rioja monopolising the longest readings.

The middle band: 1m 27s to 1m 31s

Another 66 towns, 38% of the province, landed between 1m 27s and 1m 31s. The ceiling of the band, 1m 31s, was reached by 13 towns at once, 10 seconds short of Canales de la Sierra, which set the provincial maximum. This is the transition band and it behaves like one: it holds no area of its own, it slots in between the other two.

The short third: 1m 15s to 1m 26s

The remaining 49 towns, 28% of the province, fell short of 1m 27s. The tightest of all was Alcanadre at 1m 15s, 26 seconds below Canales de la Sierra. They concentrate in the east of the province, the side furthest from the centreline of the path.
