Municipalities in Tarragona within the path of totality

169 municipalities in Tarragona saw the totality of the August 12, 2026 eclipse.

The path of totality entered Tarragona from the south and took in 169 municipalities, the capital included. The longest totality was measured at La Sénia, already in the foothills of the Ports massif, at 1m 38s. Around the Ebro delta and the Montsià the figures stayed close to a minute and a half, while further north in the province the shadow passed faster and the total phase shortened noticeably. Almost all the observational interest was concentrated in the southern end.

The index rewarded exactly that corner. Ulldecona (81.6) and Godall (81.5) led on 1m 36s, while Amposta and Deltebre gave up a few seconds in exchange for the best sky statistics in the province, a 57.1 percent historical clear-sky rate during the eclipse window. Freginals rounded out the group at 1m 35s. The provincial average is 46.8 percent, spanning 40.2 to 58.3 percent, so heading down towards the Ebro improved duration and cloud odds at the same time.

The Sun was very low here, four to five degrees above the horizon, all but grazing the skyline. On the coast that worked in your favour, since the flat delta country leaves the inland view open, whereas in enclosed valleys any range to the west-northwest could swallow the Sun before maximum. These percentages are climate statistics from 1996 to 2025, describing thirty-year tendencies rather than the sky on the day. Spain's next total eclipse, on 2 August 2027, touches only Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla; from Tarragona it means travelling.

Totality was not evenly distributed across Tarragona: 96 seconds separated its best-placed town from its worst. That is why the list is split into three bands worked out from the province itself, the terciles of its own duration distribution rather than one fixed cut applied to all thirty-one provinces. Inside each band the towns stay in alphabetical order.

The long third: 1m 12s to 1m 38s

58 of the 169 towns in Tarragona, 34% of the provincial total, reached 1m 12s of totality or more. The longest reading belonged to La Sénia at 1m 38s, ahead of Alcanar (1m 37s) and Godall (1m 36s). They cluster towards the south-west of the province, the side the centreline of the path ran along: the closer to that axis, the longer the shadow took to pass.

The middle band: 51s to 1m 11s

Another 59 towns, 35% of the province, landed between 51s and 1m 11s. The ceiling of the band, 1m 11s, was reached by 4 towns at once, 27 seconds short of La Sénia, which set the provincial maximum. This is the transition band and it behaves like one: it holds no area of its own, it slots in between the other two.

The short third: 2s to 50s

The remaining 52 towns, 31% of the province, fell short of 51s. The tightest of all was Senan at 2s, 96 seconds below La Sénia. Figures like those put you on the very edge of the path, where the shadow only clips the ground and totality shrinks to little more than a blink. They concentrate in the north-east of the province, the side furthest from the centreline of the path.
