Municipalities in Madrid within the path of totality

93 municipalities in Madrid saw the totality of the August 12, 2026 eclipse.

The city of Madrid missed totality altogether, and that was the fact that framed everything else. The path only reached the northern edge of the region, yet it still took in 93 municipalities, nearly all of them in the sierra and the Lozoya basin. Somosierra recorded the regional maximum at 89 seconds, a little under a minute and a half. These were not the durations available in the middle of the path, but they were the most reachable ones for several million people, with everything that implied for roads and parking.

The index here stages a close contest between two criteria. La Hiruela leads on 75.9, pairing 88 seconds with a 46.3 % clear-sky rate, and Prádena del Rincón follows at 75.6 on a healthier 49 %. Somosierra, which held the longest totality in the region, slips to third at 74.9 because its 41.7 % is the weakest sky record in the group. Cervera de Buitrago (74.6) and Buitrago del Lozoya (74.4) work the other way, trading roughly ten seconds for 54.2 % and 52.2 %, the best figures of the five.

The Sun sat 7 to 8 degrees above the horizon, and in mountain country that decided who saw the eclipse and who did not: a single ridge to the west-northwest brought on an early local sunset and left the valley floors with nothing. Passes and northwest-facing slopes proved far better than towns hemmed in by hillsides. The clear-sky percentages, from 41.7 % to 59.5 % and averaging 53 %, condense three decades of Augusts between 1996 and 2025, not that evening's sky. The next total eclipse over Spain, 2 August 2027, misses Madrid entirely: its path stops at Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla.

Totality was not evenly distributed across Madrid: 79 seconds separated its best-placed town from its worst. That is why the list is split into three bands worked out from the province itself, the terciles of its own duration distribution rather than one fixed cut applied to all thirty-one provinces. Inside each band the towns stay in alphabetical order.

The long third: 1m 11s to 1m 29s

32 of the 93 towns in Madrid, 34% of the provincial total, reached 1m 11s of totality or more. The longest reading belonged to Somosierra at 1m 29s, ahead of La Hiruela (1m 28s) and Montejo de la Sierra (1m 26s). They cluster towards the north of the province, the side the centreline of the path ran along: the closer to that axis, the longer the shadow took to pass.

The middle band: 45s to 1m 10s

Another 32 towns, 34% of the province, landed between 45s and 1m 10s. The ceiling of the band, 1m 10s, was reached by 2 towns at once, 19 seconds short of Somosierra, which set the provincial maximum. This is the transition band and it behaves like one: it holds no area of its own, it slots in between the other two.

The short third: 10s to 44s

The remaining 29 towns, 31% of the province, fell short of 45s. The tightest of all was Collado Villalba at 10s, 79 seconds below Somosierra. Figures like those put you on the very edge of the path, where the shadow only clips the ground and totality shrinks to little more than a blink. They concentrate in the south of the province, the side furthest from the centreline of the path.
