The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse in Vega de Liébana (Cantabria)

Liébana offers a correlation that sounds counter-intuitive until you look at the map: the higher a municipality's average elevation, the less clear horizon it keeps. Cabezón de Liébana, at 733 metres, had 5.6 degrees of unobstructed Sun; Pesaguero, at 778 metres, 4.7; Vega de Liébana, at 906 metres, 4.4; and Camaleño, at 1,208 metres, drops to -1.6 and the model treats it as blocked. The altitude of these municipalities is supplied by the very massifs that close off the west, so climbing cleared nothing.

Starting from that disadvantage, Vega de Liébana still posted 100 seconds of totality, the highest figure in the province among municipalities considered observable, and 72.1 points, second in the Cantabrian index by one tenth behind Potes. Its sky statistics, 19.1 per cent clear days and 60.8 per cent cloud cover, correspond to the 1996-2025 average for 12 August and not to what happened on the day.
