The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse in Canales de la Sierra (La Rioja)

At 1,575 metres, Canales de la Sierra was the highest municipality anywhere in La Rioja to see totality, and one of only two to reach the provincial maximum: 101 seconds of covered Sun, the same figure as Villavelayo, six kilometres downstream. Nationally those 101 seconds were worth 740th place out of 3,963.

The climate model gives it a 35.8% chance of an open sky on that date across the three decades modelled, 136th of the 174 Rioja towns, with 42.5% average cloudiness and highs that typically stop at 22.8 degrees, the coolest among this archive's Rioja entries. These are thirty-year averages, not an account of that evening: nobody knows today what the sky did over the upper Najerilla. The horizon, on the other hand, was on its side, with 4.7 degrees of free air between the disc and the ridge line, enough room in a hemmed-in valley. Totality ended at 20:30:13 and the Sun still held on for 46 minutes and 56 seconds before setting.
