The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse in Villavelayo (La Rioja)

No municipality in La Rioja spent longer inside the umbra than Villavelayo, with exactly 101 seconds between 20:28:33 and 20:30:14, a figure matched only by Canales de la Sierra. That put it third in the provincial observing index, on 77.8 points, and 740th in the national duration ranking.

Behind the duration came a warning. The horizon calculation gave it barely 2.0 degrees between the Sun and the slopes that closed off the west: 164th of 174, among the tightest in La Rioja despite its 1,120 metres of elevation. With the disc eight degrees up and falling, two degrees of margin amounts to four solar diameters, a cushion a single badly chosen ridge could swallow whole. In that same range the model wrote off Villoslada de Cameros, 0.2 degrees in deficit, and Torrecilla en Cameros, 0.5 degrees short. Villavelayo escaped narrowly, and anyone standing there had to think hard about which hillside to watch from, because the ridge line mattered as much as the municipal boundary.
