The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse in Eskoriatza (Gipuzkoa)

A detail the tables do not highlight: in Eskoriatza the total phase ended at 20:28:09 and the Sun did not set until 21:17:00, forty-nine minutes later. The eclipse was still under way when the disc slipped below the horizon, so that evening was far more partial eclipse than anything else, with the Sun sinking all the while.

In a tight valley, that spare time was worth nothing if the western slope stood in the way. The terrain treated Eskoriatza kindly, with 1.9 degrees of obstruction and 6.1 of clear Sun for an average elevation of 571 metres, the second highest in the Gipuzkoa group. Its 35 seconds were the second-best duration in the province, eight below Leintz-Gatzaga, 3.7 kilometres away, and they earned it 48.2 index points. Those 48.2 points sit 2.5 behind the provincial leader and 2 ahead of Aretxabaleta, a very tight spread for gaps of eight and six seconds of totality. Its historical clear-sky share, 18.4 per cent, condenses thirty Augusts between 1996 and 2025.
