The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse in Arrasate/Mondragón (Gipuzkoa)

Arrasate/Mondragón gathers both provincial extremes into a single entry. On one hand it is the Gipuzkoa municipality with the best clear-sky statistics among the five that entered the band and remained in view: 19.6 per cent clear days for 12 August in the 1996-2025 series, almost three points above Leintz-Gatzaga. On the other, it had the worst horizon of that group: 3.9 degrees of terrain in front, so that of the Sun's 8 degrees only 4.1 stayed clear.

It is also the lowest, 326 metres of average elevation, which is to say the valley floor. And its totality lasted a mere 21 seconds, from 20:27:36 to 20:27:57, second shortest in the province. The index folded that mix of virtues and penalties into 43.5 points and fourth place. Its mean cloud cover for the date, 57.3 per cent, is barely distinguishable from that of the rest of the valley. Holding the best statistical sky was worth little when what was missing was a window to look through.
