The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse in Leintz-Gatzaga (Gipuzkoa)

A neat coincidence: the 43 seconds of totality at Leintz-Gatzaga, the Gipuzkoa maximum, last exactly as long as the whole of the province's totality. The shadow entered the territory at 20:27:33, in this very municipality, and left at 20:28:16, here as well; in between, the other five Gipuzkoa municipalities lived through their total phases, none of them longer than 35 seconds.

That is the advantage of sitting on the south-western corner, the point in the territory closest to the axis of the band. At 657 metres of average elevation it was also the highest of the five observable ones, with 1.7 degrees of obstruction beneath the Sun. What it lacked was sky: its 16.9 per cent of clear days on 12 August is the lowest in the province across the 1996-2025 series, and that series describes thirty Augusts, not this one. It still led the Gipuzkoa index on 50.7 points, the only provincial score above 50.
