Three municipalities along the Esgueva valley and its edge with the Cerrato ended on exactly the same score, 82.7, and Canillas de Esgueva was one of them. The other two, Fombellida and Castroverde de Cerrato, lie 4.0 and 8.7 kilometres away. All three logged 100 seconds of totality, with sky statistics separated by three tenths of a percentage point.

What did vary between them was the ground. Canillas sits at 830 metres, the lowest of the three, and its horizon clearance of 7.9 degrees was also the tightest of the trio, though in a province whose worst case is around 6.5 degrees that still counts as a comfortable skyline. With the Sun eight degrees up, any of the three would do and the real choice came down to the last kilometre: a line of poplars along the river mattered more than the gap in index points. The total phase ran from 20:29:24 to 20:31:04, and the Sun took another 49 minutes and 41 seconds to set.
