It is worth explaining here where Barillas's 85 seconds came from, because the number has a specific and unintuitive cause. The magnitude of the eclipse at this point was 1.03: the Moon's disc appeared barely three per cent larger than the Sun's. That slim margin was all there was, and it is why the 2026 totality was measured in seconds rather than minutes right across Spain. A lunar disc only slightly larger covers the solar one for very little time, however well placed you are relative to the centre line.

Under that ceiling, the 85 seconds at Barillas, from 20:28:38 to 20:30:03, were the fifth best figure among the 141 Navarrese municipalities inside the band. It sits at 384 metres, the western profile left it 5.4 degrees free with the Sun at 7, and its sky record of 50.9% clear afternoons across the thirty-year series is the fifth best in the region. The Sun set at 21:11:21 with the eclipse still open.
