The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse in Villabuena de Álava/Eskuernaga (Araba/Álava)

Within 3.5 kilometres of Villabuena de Álava/Eskuernaga there are four municipalities, Baños de Ebro at 2.3, Navaridas at 2.5 and Samaniego at 3.4 among them, and every one of them had between 81 and 83 seconds of totality. Astronomically, the map of this corner of the Rioja Alavesa is flat: choosing a village changed nothing.

What did vary was elevation, from the 449 metres of Baños to the 597 of Leza, and with it the horizon each one faced. Villabuena came out well in that distribution, with 0.7 degrees of obstruction, the best figure in the group alongside Baños de Ebro, and 7.3 degrees of clear Sun. Its 82 seconds and its 27.3 per cent historical share of open sky left it fifth in the provincial index on 68 points, 3.7 behind the leader. Of the real sky on that 12 August this archive holds nothing, only a thirty-year average.
