The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse in Quintanilla de la Mata (Burgos)

Third place in Spain. Quintanilla de la Mata closed the observing index on 84.6 points, behind only Torreblanca, in Castellón, and Villafruela, fourteen kilometres away. It managed that without leading any single category, which is exactly what the index was designed to reward.

Its 106 seconds of totality, from 20:28:54 to 20:30:40, fell one short of the Burgos maximum. Its horizon clearance of 8.3 degrees more than doubled the Sun's altitude at maximum and placed it 42nd among the 371 municipalities in the province under the shadow. And its sky statistic, 53.6% of that date clear across the three decades measured, was the twenty-ninth best in Burgos. None of the three values was the best on offer, but none was weak either, and that was enough to overtake towns that were longer or sunnier. The Sun set at 21:19:48, with the eclipse still in its partial phase. The village stands at 905 metres, and the partial phase had already been under way for a full 55 minutes when the umbra arrived.
