The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse in Labastida/Bastida (Araba/Álava)

Labastida/Bastida is the westernmost, the highest and the cloudiest of the leading Álava group. At 538 metres of average elevation, almost ninety above Baños de Ebro, it records 50.5 per cent mean cloud cover for the date, the poorest value among the five leaders, with 27.3 per cent clear days.

It is also the most isolated: its immediate neighbours are no longer villages on the Ebro bank but Zambrana, 5.9 kilometres away with 81 seconds of totality, or Berantevilla with 80. Sitting further west, it met the shadow before anyone else in the group: totality from 20:27:55 to 20:29:18, seven seconds ahead of Lapuebla de Labarca, 23 kilometres to the east. It shares with Baños and Elciego the 83 seconds that mark the Álava ceiling, and its horizon was no enemy either, with 1.5 degrees of terrain in front of a Sun standing at 8. The cloud percentages summarise thirty years, from 1996 to 2025.
