The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse in Castellet i la Gornal (Barcelona)

Of the three Barcelona municipalities that grazed totality, Castellet i la Gornal is the only one that does not face the sea, and that inland position paid off. At 131 metres of average elevation, more than triple that of Cubelles 6 kilometres away, it had the least terrain in front of the Sun: 0.9 degrees of obstruction, against 1.9 in Cubelles and 1.4 in Vilanova i la Geltrú.

With the disc only 4 degrees above the horizon, the lowest altitude anywhere in the mainland band, that half-degree difference was not a nuance but half of the available margin. It also leads the trio on sky statistics, with 42.8 per cent clear days for the date between 1996 and 2025 and 38.5 per cent mean cloud cover. What it lacked was seconds: 20 of totality, from 20:29:25 to 20:29:45, five fewer than Cubelles, and that left it second in the provincial index on 50.1 points.
