The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse in Carballeda de Valdeorras (Ourense)

Four point two degrees. That was the gap the terrain model left between the Sun and the ground line at Carballeda de Valdeorras: the tightest of the fifteen municipalities Ourense contributed to the totality band, and roughly half the provincial median of about 8.3. That number is the sierra talking, and it explains why here the choice of exact observing spot outranked every other consideration.

The striking part is that even with that penalty it tied at the top of the Ourense index on 66.5 points. Duration did it: 67 seconds, a second under the provincial ceiling, second of fifteen. Its sky, 40.3% of clear days, ranks seventh in the province, with mean cloud cover of 36.9% and rain in 30.7% of Augusts. At 814 metres it is the sixth highest point in eclipsed Ourense, and its average high of 26.1 degrees is the lowest of the five municipalities gathered here. Totality ran between 20:29:05 and 20:30:12, eleven degrees of Sun at azimuth 281, and the eclipse ended at 21:22:49.
