The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse in Burela (Lugo)

Few places along the Spanish band illustrated the contradiction of the 2026 eclipse better than Burela. On one hand, 109 seconds of totality, tied with Ribadeo at the top of Lugo and a single second short of the peninsular record. On the other, 6.8 % clear skies on 12 August over the last thirty years: only seven of the 66 Lugo municipalities in shadow had a worse average. The best possible ticket to the worst possible screening room.

The index still leaves it second in the province on 71.7 points, because the weight given to duration compensates. From its 118 metres the Sun stood at 11 degrees with 8.0 clear of terrain, comfortable margin for a harbour open to the Cantabrian Sea. Totality from 20:26:42 to 20:28:31, maximum at 20:27:37 and the end of the partial phase at 21:21:06. Those percentages are climatology from 1996 to 2025 and say nothing about the sky on that particular day.
