The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse in Artzentales (Bizkaia)

Artzentales closes the Biscayan index top five on 54.5 points and 52 seconds of totality, but its interesting number is a different one: 7.1 degrees of horizon clearance, the most generous among the province's five leaders. With the Sun 8 degrees up at maximum, that means the terrain in front of it rose less than a degree above the horizontal. The comparison with Balmaseda, a few kilometres south, is brutal: there the margin falls to 2.3 degrees. In an eclipse that happened almost at ground level, that gap was worth more than five extra seconds.

Here the ending was actually visible. Totality ran from 20:27:11 to 20:28:03, and fourth contact came at 21:20:07 with the Sun still above the horizon: Artzentales belongs to the western half of the band, where the whole eclipse fitted in before sunset. What does not change is the cloud lottery: the historical chance of open sky stops at 18.6%, with average cloud cover of 58.6%, on the 1996-2025 series. That is a thirty-year statistic, not a report of that evening.
