The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse in León (León)

Ten degrees of solar altitude at maximum. That is one of the highest values anywhere in the Spanish band and the best geographical inheritance of the city of Leon, sitting at the northwestern end of the track, where the Sun had not yet sunk towards the horizon as it had on the Mediterranean. At that altitude the terrain model computed 8.9 degrees of free clearance.

That number, however, needs a caveat that matters little in a village and changes everything in a city: the calculation runs on a digital terrain model and knows nothing about buildings. Downtown, the line to clear towards the west-northwest was the rooftops, not the hills. Otherwise Leon was a capital of middling numbers: 105 seconds of totality, 47th of 211; a 46.6% clear-sky share across thirty summers of records, 88th; and an index score of 82.2, 29th. Totality ran from 20:28:15 to 20:30:00 and the eclipse ended at 21:22:02, before sunset.
