The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse in Barreiros (Lugo)

Barreiros had the freest skyline of the six municipalities of Lugo in this archive: 10.6 degrees of free sky with the Sun at 11 above the sea line, which is to say almost no relief in the viewing direction. With 108 seconds of totality, the third longest of the 66 Lugo municipalities in the band and just one behind Ribadeo's maximum, the geometry worked out perfectly.

The climate record was the exact reverse: 7.4 % clear days for that date over the 1996-2025 period, with mean cloud cover of 65.4 %. On the Mariña coast, duration and sky pulled in opposite directions, and the index, which weights duration at 40 % and climate at 30 %, ended up giving it 71.5 points and third place in the province. Here, unlike in eastern Spain, the eclipse did finish with the Sun still up: the partial phase closed at 21:21:14, almost an hour after totality.
